Ledger — Start

Secure your crypto with a hardware wallet. Quick setup, recovery-ready, and privacy-first.

Welcome to Ledger — quick start guide

This page walks you through the essential steps to set up your Ledger device (Ledger Nano S, Nano S Plus, Nano X and compatible models). Follow these instructions carefully to keep your private keys offline and your crypto secure. The whole process takes around 5–15 minutes depending on how many accounts you add.

Why use a Ledger hardware wallet?

  • Private keys never leave the device. Transactions are signed on the hardware — not on the internet-connected computer.
  • Recoverable backup. A 24-word recovery phrase lets you restore access if your device is lost or damaged.
  • Multi-asset support. Store Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, and thousands of tokens safely.
  • Industry audited firmware. Regular updates and independent audits reduce risk.

Before you begin

  • Unbox your official Ledger device and verify tamper-evidence packaging. Only buy devices from ledger.com or authorized resellers.
  • Have a pen and the recovery worksheet that comes in the box — never store the recovery words digitally.
  • Use a clean, trusted computer and a secure Wi‑Fi network for installation.

Step-by-step setup

1
Power on and choose a PIN.

Turn on the device, follow the screen prompts, and choose a 4–8 digit PIN. Pick a PIN you can remember — never share it.

2
Write down your recovery phrase.

The device will display your 24-word recovery phrase. Write these words in order on the physical card provided. This phrase is the only way to recover funds if the device is lost — keep it offline and secure.

3
Install Ledger Live on your computer or mobile.

Download Ledger Live from the official site (ledger.com/start or ledger.com/ledger-live). Ledger Live is the companion app used to manage accounts, install apps on your device, and send/receive crypto.

4
Connect your device and add accounts.

Follow Ledger Live to connect the device, install currency apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.), and create accounts. For each asset, Ledger Live syncs your public addresses so you can receive funds securely.

5
Receive and verify funds.

When receiving crypto, always verify the receiving address on the device screen — this ensures no man-in-the-middle altered an address on your computer.

Security best practices

  • Never share your recovery phrase or PIN. Ledger staff or support will never ask for your 24 words or your PIN.
  • Keep backups offline. Store your recovery phrase in a secure location, consider metal backup plates for extreme durability.
  • Use official software. Only download Ledger Live from ledger.com. Beware of phishing websites and typosquatting domains.
  • Enable passphrase (optional). Advanced users can add an additional passphrase for an extra security layer — use with care, as losing it may lock funds permanently.

Troubleshooting & support

If you encounter issues during setup: double-check cables, try a different USB port or device, and ensure Ledger Live is up-to-date. For recovery or replacement guidance, consult official Ledger support and follow verified help articles. Never enter your recovery phrase into any website or software other than the secure recovery process on a trusted device.

Recommended next steps

  • Update your Ledger device firmware when prompted by Ledger Live.
  • Install only the currency apps you need to minimize attack surface.
  • Consider using a dedicated computer for crypto management for added hygiene.

Ledger hardware wallets are designed to keep your private keys isolated. Following the steps above will help ensure your crypto remains in your control, protected from online threats.
